Background

The Lighthouse is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting independence for people who are blind and visually impaired by providing programs that focus on economic opportunity and self-reliance. In addition to a core, modern manufacturing operation that employs people with vision impairments, the Lighthouse offers a range of independent living, competitive employment, and health related services.

History

1915 - The Lighthouse for the Blind in New Orleans was founded to provide jobs for the blind and visually impaired. 1955 - After several moves, the Lighthouse relocated to a 2.8 acre campus at 123 State Street in the heart of uptown New Orleans, the site of a former lumber company. The new facilities included the administrative and services building, the manufacturing plant and warehouses. An existing lumber warehouse, at least 50 years old in 1955, continues to be in use to this day. Some services were offered, but the organization was primarily a manufacturing and jobs creation non-profit.
